"Fashion isn't just about what we wear—it’s an artistic expression of identity, culture, and pure creativity."
GUSTAVO APITI : Emmy Award–Winning Fashion Designer | Founder of Gustavo Apiti Couture
For Gustavo Apiti, the path to high fashion began far from the international runways. Growing up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, his first lessons in tailoring took place at home, learning the basics of stitch and structure from his mother and sister. Today, as the Emmy Award–winning founder and creative force behind Gustavo Apiti Couture, he bridges that early family legacy with formal design training, merging traditional craftsmanship, African cultural roots, and modern luxury design.
Fresh off celebrating ten years of his independent fashion house, Apiti sits down with us to discuss his journey across continents, the discipline behind building a luxury brand from the ground up, his reliance on Italian textile craftsmanship, and how he uses his foundation to mentor the next generation of creative talent.
What initially drew you to fashion design, and how has your journey evolved?
Growing up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, I developed a passion for fashion, art, and creativity. My journey began at home, where my late mother and older sister introduced me to sewing and taught me my first techniques. I later continued learning sewing in school before pursuing Fashion Apparel and Design in South Africa. In 2013, I moved to Seattle, where I gained professional experience with Luly Yang and Nordstrom. In 2016, I founded Gustavo Apiti Couture. Today, my vision extends beyond fashion into education, philanthropy, and international luxury design.
What experience significantly influenced your career or personal growth?
Moving from Africa to the United States was a life-changing experience. Starting over in a new country taught me resilience, discipline, patience, and determination. It strengthened my belief that success comes through perseverance, hard work, and believing in yourself.
How do you stay creatively inspired?
I draw inspiration from architecture, art, music, nature, and my African heritage. I love combining traditional couture craftsmanship with modern luxury. Seeing my clients feel confident, elegant, and unique in my designs motivates me to continue creating.
What tradition from your upbringing remains important to you?
My Congolese heritage, especially our appreciation for family, music, culture, and elegant dressing, remains close to my heart. Coming from a family connected to legendary Congolese musicians such as Tabu Ley Rochereau and Roger Izeidi has also influenced my appreciation for creativity and artistic expression.
What has been your greatest professional challenge?
Building an independent luxury fashion brand has been one of my greatest challenges. Maintaining exceptional quality while managing production, finances, and major runway events requires tremendous dedication. I overcome these challenges through discipline, teamwork, perseverance, and staying focused on my vision.
Who has been a major influence in your life?
My parents, the late Justin Mpilamba Apiti and Charlotte Kiokioko Mayenge, have been among my greatest influences. They taught me the importance of humility, respect, hard work, and perseverance. My late mother also played a special role in introducing me to sewing, which eventually became my career.
What has been a significant career milestone?
Winning a Northwest Regional Emmy Award in 2021 was one of my proudest achievements. Celebrating the 10th anniversary of Gustavo Apiti Couture in June 2026 with more than 450 guests was another unforgettable milestone. Both represent years of dedication, sacrifice, and perseverance.
What artistic work has shaped your professional approach?
I am inspired by the legacy of great haute couture designers and their commitment to craftsmanship, innovation, and elegance. Their work reminds me that fashion is more than clothing; it is an artistic expression of identity, culture, and creativity.
How do you balance your professional and personal life?
Running a fashion business requires tremendous dedication, but I value family, faith, meaningful relationships, and personal well-being. I believe true success includes maintaining a healthy balance while making a positive impact on others.
Who would you love to collaborate with?
I would love to collaborate with a legendary fashion house such as Christian Dior. Combining European couture craftsmanship with African cultural influences would be an extraordinary opportunity to celebrate creativity, elegance, and cultural diversity.
What are your future goals?
My ambition is to establish Gustavo Apiti Couture as an internationally recognized luxury fashion house, with collections presented in Paris, Milan, and New York. Through the Gustave Foundation, I also hope to empower more young people through fashion education, mentorship, and creative opportunities.
What are your interests outside fashion?
I enjoy music, art, architecture, cultural experiences, and community development. I am particularly passionate about mentorship, philanthropy, and helping young people discover their talents and achieve their dreams.
What advice would you give aspiring designers?
Believe in yourself, develop your own creative identity, and master your craft. Fashion requires more than talent; it demands discipline, technical knowledge, patience, and consistency. Never allow rejection or challenges to discourage you from pursuing your dreams.
Have you ever been to Italy? Did you like it?
Italy is a country I greatly admire for its rich fashion heritage, exceptional craftsmanship, and luxury manufacturing. We work with Italian manufacturers for some of our garments, and I deeply appreciate the quality, precision, and timeless elegance associated with Italian fashion.
