PRESENCE AND FLOW: CAPTURING THE HUMAN BEYOND THE IMAGE

In Presence and Flow: Capturing the Human Beyond the Image, photographer and author Julia Daschbach explores the evolving intersection of fashion portraiture and authentic human experience. By examining the tension between curated perfection and the unguarded reality of her subjects, she reveals how a shift toward presence over performance allows for a more profound connection within the frame.

Photography is a long-known medium. Capturing moments constantly, acting as a sort of keepsake for the passing of time. We are in an era where fashion imagery is increasingly defined by precision, control, and a version of perfection that everyone is constantly seeking. However, it seems a new generation of photographers is quietly shifting this narrative. Photographs are once again turning away from spectacle and towards something more human. At the intersection of portraiture and fashion, this approach does not seek to reject the industry but rather expand it. It asks a simple question: what exists beyond the image we are accustomed to seeing?

Within the visual landscape of a photograph, there is a growing desire to explore what lies beneath the surface. The mind craves an explanation and will use its imagination till one is made. Rather than focusing on the final perfected image, some photographers are living in the grey area of the unresolved. The subject is not performing but existing, and within that moment, a fleeting image is made. A quick glimpse of reality within a frame.

A photograph is both an artifact of time and a portrait of the present, and that ambiguity is intriguing. The juxtaposition of the curated world of fashion with the real textures and stories of bodies and faces is something I wish to analyze. Highlighting the human within the image. Flowing garments, natural light, and unguarded movements create a sense of liberation I always aim to convey in my photographs. This approach exists in dialogue with the fashion world. Allowing authenticity to coexist with editorial aesthetics bridges the gap between the polished and the real, and that is a beautifully complex combination.

Photography is more than what we see. It is what we sense. By prioritizing presence over performance, these images reveal the human at the heart of fashion. In the space between the curated and the real, the photograph finds its power through being unmistakably alive. That is exactly why I devote myself to this medium. It has layers that speak when words cannot, a quiet kind of beauty.
